Advanced Minimally Invasive Kidney Stone Removal

How Dr. Terry does this differently than most other urologists.

Anatomical illustration showing kidneys with kidney stones

For many years, kidney stones which were too large to pass could only be removed using a large open incision in the patient's back. This involved significant damage to the kidney and a long recovery time.

As advancements were made, urologists were able to go through a smaller hole in the patient's back, using a tube, scope, and other instruments to break up stones and remove pieces. This was an improvement; however, it was still very painful and often required a large tube coming out of the back for days or weeks after the procedure. This technique is still what most urologists use for stones over 2cm in size.

Dr. Terry trained under Dr. Dean Assimos, a master of the PCNL procedure, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During his years after residency, Dr. Terry has continued to refine his technique based upon the foundation he acquired at UAB.

Currently, Dr. Terry believes there is a better way to remove kidney stones greater than 1.5cm in size. This is called retrograde access miniature percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (retro-mini-PCNL).

Key Advantages of Dr. Terry's Technique

1

Smaller Scopes

Much smaller scopes are used during this modified procedure — about half the size compared to the standard equipment.

2

Retrograde Access

Instead of inserting a needle through the patient's back, a very small scope and a special retroperc wire establishes a safe channel beginning inside the kidney and moving outwards toward the flank.

3

Smaller Tube

The tube inserted into the patient's back is about half the size of the standard tube and includes a vacuum suction feature, making stone removal faster and easier.

4

Advanced Laser Technology

A tiny laser fiber not much larger than a human hair delivers energy to crush kidney stones into powdery pieces small enough to be vacuumed out.

Dr. Terry is proud to offer this highly effective combination of state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to his patients with kidney stones over 1.5 cm in size.
